Here are some "must have" items

All of the software below is highly recommended by AMUG and no one told us to tell you this stuff!

The links below will take you to read about the software
You can then decide whether or not to download it
(Some version numbers have changed)

We give 10/10 for all of the following

Click on the links to go get 'em!

Fish

Fish is an aquarium simulator. Excellent. Go get it!

TextWrangler

Probably the best text editor for Mac users - and freeware too!

SeaMonkey

An excellent Web site maker, web browser and emailer application. This AMUG web site is made with Sea Monkey! Most Mac users will find the web site maker quality to be the most useful as all new Macs come with Safari and Mail. Extra dictionaries are downloadable and you can contribute your skills to the further development of this Project. Extremely easy to use. Highly recommended.

Mac the Ripper

We recommend that users carefully evaluate whether their planned use of this product is legal. We do not condone the use of any software in violation of the law.

MacTheRipper is free and is a DVD extractor It removes CSS encryption, Macrovision protection, sets the disc's region to '0' for region-free, and is capable of removing RCE region checking. It can also copy ARccOS copy-protected DVDs. This is to backup your legally-purchased DVDs onto your hard drive. Tip: Change System Preferences "When you insert a video DVD" to "Ignore" - otherwise Apple DVD Player will nag you if the DVD is not the same region. Requires Mac OS 10.2 or higher.

MPEG Streamclip

For Mac OS 10.2 and higher. Video converter software, allows you to convert your home-made DVD into QuickTime format (requires purchase of the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component) at 4.3 ratio and save to backup. Requires QuickTime Player (free) to open the files.

QuickTime Pro

Movie editor. Allows copy and paste and editing of movies with many export formats for movies and sound extraction. Requires prior installation of the free QuickTime Player to add the serial number. Costs $29.99.

Wiretap Pro 1.3.4

For Mac OS 10.5. This free version (soon to be obsolete) of the software allows you to record the sound from your computer speakers, which you can then open as an AIFF file in Audion, iTunes or other sound conversion software. This version has been superceded by Wiretap Studio (which is not free.)

Google Earth

The one that everyone is talking about. A fantastic 3D application that shows you the whole of the planet. Requires Mac OS 10.4 or higher. Does not work on old Macs.

Skype

Free computer to computer phone calls and video around the world. Skype is the big internet news over the last few years.
You can chat online, use a web cam to talk with your family and friends and buy cheap telephone time if you want to.
Registration required, but very reliable service. Owned by eBay. Recommended.

SiteSucker

SiteSucker is an application that allows you to download complete websites to your hard drive, then read them at leisure.
This is ideal for people who don't have their own internet connection at home. As most websites are public information, there is nothing wrong with using this application. OK, you are not going to access business websites (so, please don't try) as they have firewalls and are secure (thank goodness!) but for info websites this application is ideal. It takes a while to understand how to set up the Preferences, but after that, you're up and running. Highly recommended. Mac OS 10.4 and also earlier. Free (donation-ware) with donation requested.

Adobe Reader

Essential for reading Adobe Acrobat files. These files are most usually Read-Me's and download files from the web; such as technical specifications for hardware and software. Available for free by download from the Adobe website with a choice of version, depending on which Mac operating system you use.

Stuffit Expander

Stuffit Expander is free and now in version 9. It has been around (just about!) forever, and allows you to open downloaded compressed files. The Pro version - 'Stuffit DeLuxe' is an excellent and worthwhile purchase if you need to create compressed files and is available for purchase from the Stuffit website (and if you click the page to leave a couple of times they will even give you a discount!) Don't click on the free offer for the Standard Version as it is NOT free - it's a TrialPay offer only if you buy something else!

Freeware for Mac OS9 and Mac OSX. One of the biggest successes of Apple, especially when they produced it for windoze. Then came the Apple iPod music player which has been a roaring success and taken Design of the Year Awards all over the planet. iTunes is a player/converter which allows you to play and convert music across 3 formats: AIFF, WAV and MP3 (the conversion setting that you specify in the Preferences will be the format available in the 'Advanced' Menu bar) and also has a great Visualiser. Does not allow sound wave or filter adjustments though, for that you need something called

Audion

Freeware for Mac OS9 and Mac OSX. Since the beginning of 2005 Audion 3 is now free. Audion has all (except the Visualiser) of the things that iTunes has, except for an (arguably) inferior user interface. The main point in getting Audion is to be able to edit sound files. You can convert file formats and also cut, copy and paste music, just like you do with text in AppleWorks. Amazing!

The FREE Audion serial number is here

VLC Media Player

Freeware. For Mac OSX only. Allows you to play 16:9 DVDs in full screen mode by cropping the display via setting your monitor viewing size. Thought by many to be better than Apple DVD Player. Allows you to take screen grabs and make playlists.

Snapz Pro2 for Mac OS9

Snapz ProX for Mac OSX

Shareware for Mac OS9 and Mac OSX. This is a configurable 'camera' which allows you to take snapshots of your screen, windows, Menus, or selected area. Configurable application helpers. It is being able to take snaps of Menus that gives it the edge over similar apps. Essential for teachers and writers.

Copy Paste

Shareware for Mac OS9. This utility gives you ten clipboards, so that you can copy and paste across all of them. e.g. command-c-1 to command-v-1 etc. The contents of the clipboards are retained through shutdown and reboots.

Program Switcher

Shareware for Mac OS9. Allows you to switch between open applications from the Finder, by moving through your open applications by using the keyboard keys of option and tab - thus saving you 'mouse arm' by having to go up to the top right hand side of your monitor, great in conjunction with Copy Paste for cross-application work. (Mac OSX has a built in function for switching between open applications by using the Apple and tab keys).

Graphic Converter

Shareware Mac OS8, Mac OS9 and Mac OSX. Now also for Mac Intel. The long standing graphics application. This application will open just about everything. Also handy to use to check your graphics if you don't fancy launching Photoshop - indeed, GraphicConverter will work with images that Photoshop cannot open, such as picture clippings and .ICO formats. Available in 12 languages and able to handle more than 200 graphic formats. Thorsten Lemke's dedication to the Mac platform is legendary. Keep up the good work, Lemke!

Font Book

Mac OSX Universal. Shareware. Also from Thorsten Lemke. With this application you can view and print out sheets of all of your fonts - typefaces, sizes and styles. This is a marvellous tool for people who work with desktop publishing and need to see their font options often and quickly. Available in seven languages. Recommended.

Adobe Type Manager Light (ATM)

Freeware for Mac OS9. The Adobe Type Manager Light (ATM 4.6) is essential for viewing your fonts correctly on screen,
and for smoothing fonts in documents.

The general Adobe downloads page
is here.

DiskTracker

Shareware for Mac OS9 and Mac OSX. DiskTracker is essential for people who use a lot of external disks.
You create a new archive, put a CD in the drive, select 'scan drive' choose the disk you want to archive and DiskTracker then archives the filenames of everything on the disk. Archives any drive and also works with home made mp3 disks. You then search the archive, click on the required item and DiskTracker asks you to insert the disk that contains the file. Just reach over for the disk, put the disk in the drive and DiskTracker opens the file. Never lose a disk again or spend forever searching disks manually. Essential software.

MacTracker
Freeware. Details of every Mac item ever made. A great little utility to see where Apple has come from. Excellent.
Keep up the good work, Ian.

End Note

All of the above mentioned items have passed with flying colours and we can recommend them to you as being genuinely
useful (otherwise they would not be on this page.) Upgrades from recently previous versions of Shareware are usually
available at a lower charge. We hope that you have found something of interest to you on this page.

There's a LOT of shareware for the Mac out there - but be selective. Shareware can crash your Mac if it hasn't been finished properly. Most of it is very well made, but some of it is not and therefore goes in the Trash.

If you would like to check out more shareware and freeware for the Mac, then maybe visit
Versiontracker. You can sign up for a weekly mailing (I've been getting one every week for the last twelve years). They don't hassle you all the time with any other messages, and they don't pass your email address on to anybody else. Highly recommended.

If you have found some good and useable Freeware or Shareware for the Mac then please let us know!
